Are You Taking The Right Vitamins?? The Answer May Surprise You!
9/26/2008
Over 150 million Americans take supplements. The price tag is over a staggering $20 billion annually according to the Office of Dietary Supplements. I suppose it would come as no surprise that our soils have long been depleted of vital nutrients needed by the human body for proper function and healing.
I firmly believe that if given the proper tools, the human body can heal itself of any illness. I have been on custom supplements and have not taken a pharmaceutical in over 5 years, including antibiotics!!
Thinking about all of this has led me to one very puzzling question. If so many people are taking vitamin supplements then why are we so sick as a society? After doing a bit of research, I think I finally found some answers.
Most drug store and health food store vitamins have a minimal absorption rate (between 15-20%). That means that 80- 85% of the nutrients that go into your body are not used but are wasted! As in they go right down the toilet. There are several factors at play here. Vitamins are carbon based (organic) and are therefore easily absorbed and used by the body. Minerals also play a vital role in our bodies but they, however are not organic, which means that the body doesn’t use them as efficiently and has a difficult time absorbing them unless they are chelated and bound to some form of carbon based food source (protein for example) that is more readily absorbed by the body. Also, nearly all tablets and some capsule supplements are made with binders, fillers and/or expcipients. The most significant one is magnesium stearate, or stearic acid (check the label), which is used as a "flow agent" so that the manufacturers’ machines can run at higher speeds. Magnesium Stearate acts as a sort of "glue" to hold everything together. Stearic acid is a saturated fat, with a high melting temperature. The stearic acid is mixed into the active ingredients, coating all the particles, and then everything is pressed together with very high energy. So with most tablets, even though they might start breaking up rapidly in the digestive tract, consider that all of the valuable nutrient particles are coated with a layer of saturated fat with a high melting temperature (145-155 degrees Fahrenheit), and your body would have to break through that before any nutrients can start to be broken down, go into dissolution, and be absorbed.
Many experts believe, and some experiments have shown that supplements in tablet form do not breakdown and go into dissolution, and therefore do not get fully used by the body. This is a major problem with the nutrition industry. Supplements in capsule form are going to breakdown and be utilized much better, but even some capsule supplements use magnesium stearate, although the impact is probably less.
I prefer to stick to my custom supplement. It has an absorption rate of 95% and there are no binders or fillers of any kind. I used to pay a small fortune for supplements (that I probably wasn’t absorbing) and now I pay around $2.00 a day. The bottom line here is that we are not what we eat. We are what we absorb. Make sure you are getting the most from your supplement. Your body will thank you tenfold.
Next week we’ll be talking about Hidden Food Allergies An In Depth Look Part 1. Don’t miss it. You know someone affected by this.
See you then!
